About This Item

Winona, Minnesota: Chinese Cook Book Company, 1941. Soft cover. Very Good. Softcover, stapled binding, orange wraps with touristy-Chinese lettering and illustration to front cover, 9-1/8" tall, 64 pp. Some soiling and wear to covers, light wear to pages, no markings found. The birthplace of actress Winona Ryder, Winona, Minnesota has probably not had an Asian population greater than 3% of its total residents (according to US Census data available.) I could find no information about Frank Yep, or the "Chinese Cook Book Company." Each recipe is accompanied by a cartoonish drawing, usually the same character in different poses. These show racial stereotypes in the way that many of the Southern cookbooks with "Mammy" drawings did. If Frank Yep was a real person, he claims to "have prepared a number of Chinese seven-course dinners in the best clubs of this country. [USA]" One interesting note, which I'm unfamiliar with, is his description that "as an average, beer is always used as an appetizer in serving a Chinese dinner, and Chinese Oolong Tea is served as an after-dinner beverage.
