London: Vizetelly & Co., 1886. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very good plus. First English edition. Finely bound in later half hunter green morocco over green cloth, stamped in gilt. Spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers, frontispiece with tissue guard and five plates. 383 pages (slightly trimmed) with top edge gilt, lacking the catalog in rear. Very good plus with hinges a bit tender but holding well. Neat gift inscription on flyleaf, otherwise bright and clean. A very attractive copy of this landmark 19th-century novel.
Synopsis
Madame Bovary is Gustave Flaubert's first novel and considered his masterpiece. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns.
