Very Good+ to Near Fine: The Book shows just a hint of shelving wear to the lower extremities; the red-tinted top edge may not be as bright as originally; a couple fo superficial scratches to the rear panel; else flawless; the binding is square and secure; the text clean. Decorated endpapers. Deckle fore-edge. Hardback: Lacks DJ. Stephen W. Meader was a social worker who wrote books for boys, 6th grade and up, in order to broaden their horizons. He wanted them to have a sense of the scale and variety of the country, from sea to sea. He wanted them to learn about the past and see progress, and be able to look to the future and see opportunity. His books are easy to read, fun and inspirational. Great for reading, sharing, and gifting. This is another favorite, unread until I was an adult, and may be the best of his many books. "Lumberjack" is historical fiction set in New Hampshire during the 1910s. The author's father was a foreman in a lumber camp/ slash managing partner in a lumber business, so the main character, Dan Garland, a teenager in a lumber camp, is semi-autobiographical. It goes into all kinds of interesting details about moving and setting up a steam-powered sawmill, and logging with horse teams, axes, cant hooks and crosscut saws. Meader's books are American classics and Lumberjack is an especially enlightening historical novel for young people—very uplifting and suspenseful.
