London, Remington and Co., 1878.. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION 1878, 2 volumes, complete set. The three parts were previously published separately and are now brought together, enlarged and improved (see Preface). Small 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, Volume 1: 1-252 pages plus adverts, Volume 2: 1-248 pages plus adverts, original publisher's blue pictorial cloth, gilt lettering to spines, black lettering and decoration to covers, black endpapers, bookplate of Woburn Abbey on pastedown of each volume. Spines faded, slight wear to head of spines, thin vertical pale mark to lower cover of Volume 1, pencil note on the free endpaper of Volume 1, a little light foxing to title pages and endpapers otherwise a very good clean set. Volume 1: the first 171 pages are on interesting details and recipes for the Oyster, followed by the Lobster. Volume 2 continues with the Lobster, then Game, Woodcock, Duck, Rabbit, Sparrows, Hare, Ruff, Grouse, Woodcock, Bustard, etc. etc., Fish and a chapter on eating frogs. Lucullus was one of the great men of Roman history, included in the biographical collections of leading generals and politicians, originating in the biographical compendium of famous Romans published by his contemporary Marcus Terentius Varro. So famous did Lucullus become for his banqueting that the word "lucullan" now means lavish, luxurious and gourmet. Library Hub Discover lists 6 copies of this edition.
