DESCRIPTION

(iv) + preface (8) + 175pp + [16] + (ii)

Book measures 200mm x 130mm approximately.

Fully bound in contemporary tan calf. Spine with five gilt ruled bands and (missing) title label. Twin gilt fillet borders to both boards.

CONDITION

Both boards are cracked with the front board being quite loose but attached by cords only. Boards and spine exhibit a few marks with chips to edges and general wear, although retaining a rich sheen. Some bumping to corners. Internally the pages are generally clean with some age-related toning and some browning, the odd spot and a little grubbiness towards the end-papers. Previous owner bookplate central to front paste-down and with a small neat ink inscription (dated 1729) to top of front end-paper.

INTERESTING

Edward Young (1683 – 1765) was an English poet, critic, philosopher and theologian, best remembered for the Night-Thoughts which was one of the most printed works of the eighteenth century and was a huge success, being translated into many languages.

The second edition is in fact the first collected edition of the seven poems published as separate folios from 1725 to 1727. This is a very important edition, thoroughly revised, with many lines added, moved, or dropped, phrases rewritten.
