A first edition copy of Evelyn Waugh's satire, set in a dystopian future, from the library of the son of Joyce Gill, his life-long friend. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original price-clipped dust wrapper. This intriguing work is one of Evelyn Waugh's post-war novels, in which he shows contempt for the concept of a 'welfare state'. In this satire, set in a dystopian Britain, the protagonist works in a state-run euthanasia centre and falls in love. Illustrated by the author. From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is very bright and smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with the odd spot to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Dust wrapper is generally smart with the odd spot and little chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Very Good
