About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1953 . First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". Various. The first edition of this beautifully illustrated dystopian short novel by Evelyn Waugh. First edition, in the publisher's original red cloth binding, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. This intriguing work is one of Evelyn Waugh's post-war novels, in which he shows contempt for the concept of a 'welfare state'. In this satire set in a dystopian Britain, the protagonist works in a state-run euthanasia centre and falls in love. With charming illustrations throughout, some of which are by the author. In the publisher's original red cloth binding, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the spine. A little rubbing to the gilt on the front board. The odd spot to endpapers. Dust wrapper is very smart, with light edge wear and small chips to the head and tail of the spine. A little sunning to the spine of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean. Near Fine
