Pp. xiv+96+[2](colophon); med. 8vo; qr. natural canvas, with gilt lettered black leather title label on spine, yellow buckram boards, faintly soiled, edges a trifle rubbed, fore-corners of upper board lightly bruised; uncut, occasionally partly unopened; book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper pastedown, the free endpapers offset, scattered foxing; The Nonesuch Press, London, 1930. One of l,600 numbered copies printed by the Curwen Press on Auvergne hand-made paper. McKitterick 68; Roberts (Lawrence) A56a. *Lacking the dust wrapper. Comprises four stories written by Lawrence in July and August 1912, then sent to Edward Garnett 'who tried without success to place them' [p. v]. (Garnett was instrumental in getting Sons and Lovers published in 1913). In his introduction, Edward's son, David Garnett, recalls travelling in Europe with Lawrence & Frieda at the time these stories were written.
