"Cualquiera que conozca a Volodia puede pensar, sin leer el libro, que esta biografía se trata de un desquite o de un ajuste de cuentas hacia un Borges que llegó a apoyar los regímenes de Videla y de Pinochet. Nada más lejos, la biografía de Volodia, aunque afronte sin miedos ni endiosamientos las posturas más controvertidas de Borges, demuestra una profundización y una objetivida que es precisamente lo que engrandece este acercamiento a la vida y a la obra de Borges. Para ello Volodia ha divido la obra en seis partes que son en realidad seis núcleos temáticos: infancia y juventud de Borges ―formación del mito―, construcción poética y símbolos recurrentes, concepción y experiencias amorosas, ideario político ―y apolítico― y momentos finales ―muy polémicos por cierto― junto con su repercusión posterior. Queda claro que, desde el título, Volodia recurre en muchas ocasiones al uso de binomios, que vendría a ser una concepción de Borges tremendamente borgeana, usando un símbolo, el del doble, que el propio Borges acuñaría en algunos de sus relatos, entre ellos el inmortal "Borges y yo" o el relato "El otro", y algunos de sus símbolos, como por ejemplo el espejo, también apuntan en esta dirección."
