About This Item
Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1956. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is crisp and clean, with no marks or wear. The edges of the text block have darkened slightly. The blue cloth covers are fresh, with light wear at edges and corners. The gilt spine lettering had dulled. The dust jacket is not price-clipped, though there is a line through the price in the bottom corner of the front flap. It is also in very good condition, with light wear overall, and some shallow fraying to the top and bottom of the spine. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. Synopsis: This is a biography of Edward Smith-Stanley, the fourteenth Earl of Derby, with a focus on his political life. "His work as Colonial Secretary in the Grey Ministry, his relations with Canada and New Zealand are dealt with, the Corn Laws and their effect on the Conservative Party are treated at length, and there is an extended discussion of his work in the House of Lords, and his attitude towards the various questions which occupied the attention of the political world in the middle of the nineteenth century. A chapter is devoted to his Second Administration, and another to his relations with Palmerston. The author concludes with an account of Derby's last administration, and his part in the Reform Bill of 1869, his retirement from the leadership of the Conservative Party, his later relations with Disraeli, and his last battle on behalf of the Irish Church."
