About This Item

London: W.H. Allen, 1959. A very bright copy with no inscriptions. Housed in the famous Mona Moore dustwrapper with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. Chipped to the head and tail of spine but a nice example, nontheless. Protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. This is Alan Sillitoe's second published book consisting of a collection of nine excellent short stories following on from the tumultuos success of the much acclaimed 'Saturday Night Sunday Morning' The first story is of course the title of the book. Fuelled with all the rebellious undertones of the successful under achiever. Our antihero avenges the authoritarian institution of Borstal in which he is placed for his crimes to society in his own calculated and intelligent way ! The story further cemented its reputation (and indeed that of the author) as a classic tale of disaffected youthful rebelliousness when it was made into an equally successful film of the same name starring a young Tom Courtenay. Raw and Gritty working class reading at its best !. First Edition. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. FIRST EDITION.

Synopsis

Alan Sillitoe was born in 1928, the son of a tannery worker. He left school at age fourteen to work in a factory. He was one of the working-class novelists who revitalized British fiction in the 1950s. His first novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was followed with the bestselling collection The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner . He adapted both works for the screen in the early 1960s. He is the author of more than 40 works of prose, poetry, and drama.
