The sea has been Jon Sander's mistress since he was a teenager. He is never happier than when sailing his thirty-four-footer Perie Banou across the great oceans, preferably alone.
It might seem incongruous but this tall Australian hero, who has spent much of his working life running sheep-shearing teams in the Western Australian outback, has displayed deeds of seamanship that have made news in every quarter of the globe.
Although a headline-shunner, Jon Sanders - who is the first to admit that he is a sort of Walter Mitty - wanted to perform a feat of sailing that had never been attempted. When he suggested a double circumnavigation alone and non-stop, friends looked him in the eye and asked, 'Are you serious?'. He was indeed serious.
The logistical problems were frightening but, a bigger question was whether both yacht and man would withstand the rigours of nearly 50,000 nautical miles around all the great capes, including the infamous Cape Horn twice.
The successful completion of his mission was to earn him the Chichester Award, the world's most prestigious personal yachting trophy. In this book Jon Sanders describes his immense battles with the wind and waves, and the other adventures he had during those lonely months.
