About This Item

London: Adam & Charles Black, 1909-1912. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 11.5" by 9.5". Not Stated. Three engaging and profusely illustrated works on early twentieth century London by author and historian Sir Walter Besant. Three volumes in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Illustrated with thirty-three plates and a folding map to the rear to 'London in the Nineteenth Century', eight plates to 'North of the Thames', and sixteen plates, two double-page plans and a folding map to the rear to 'South of the Thames'. Collated, complete. Three first edition works on London by the English novelist and historian Sir Walter Besant (1836-1901), including 'London in the Nineteenth Century' (1909), 'North of the Thames' (1911) and 'South of the Thames' (1912). In these works, Besant provides a history and topography of London, with particular emphasis on social history and social reform. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, cloth is generally smart to all volumes. Spines are slightly faded to all volumes; the front board of 'South of the Thames' is also a little faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot. Tape repair to the folding map to the rear of 'South of the Thames'. Dust wrappers are sound, though slightly sunned to the spine of the wraps. Tape repairs to the front of the wrap to 'North of the Thames', due to a 12cm tear. Small losses to the head of the spine of the wrap and front of the wrap to 'North of the Thames'. Small marks to the front of the wrap to 'North of the Thames'. Significant loss to the front of the wrap to 'South of the Thames'. Very Good Indeed
