About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape / London Limited Editions, 1989. First U.K. Edition. Limited Issue, one of 150 numbered copies signed by Amis. Octavo; 3/4 marbled paper over quarter blue-green cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; original glassine dustjacket; 470pp. Fine in a very Near Fine glassine, with just a hint of wear. Widely regarded as the likely Booker winner, it one of Amis' strongest works, the novel centers on a young clairvoyant woman who begins a tangled love affair with three different men - one of whom she knows will be her murderer. Basis for the forthcoming film starring Amber Heard, Johnny Depp, and Billy Bob Thornton.
Synopsis
London Fields is Amis's murder story for the end of the millennium. The murderee is Nicola Six, a "black hole" of sex and self-loathing intent on orchestrating her own extinction. The murderer may be Keith Talent, a violent low-life whose only passions are pornography and darts. Or is the killer the rich, honorable, and dimly romantic Guy Clinch? "A comic murder mystery, an apocalyptic satire, a scatological meditation on love and death and nuclear winter...by turns lyrical and obscene, colloquial and rhapsodic."--Michiko Kakutani, New York Times, from the Trade Paperback edition.
