About This Item

B. T. Batsford Ltd, London, first edition, 1956. Cloth, gilt cover device on both boards, top edge gilt, 4to,. xiv, 155, [2]pp, 40 ills. In the Introduction Ramsden traces the stylistic development of London Bookbinding from 1765, about which date a genuine revival seems to have set in, to about 1840. The greater part of the book is devoted to providing as much factual information in a compact form as possible on the binders working in London from 1780-1840, of whom about 2,000 are included. The details furnished give not only their names and the various addresses at which they worked during their careers, but also their family and business relations, their apprenticeships, the influence to which they were subjected or which they themselves exercised, etc. The 40 illustrations include bindings by Baumgarten and Johnson of which authenticated specimens had never previously been reproduced. Booklabel on front pastedown endpaper partially covering mark from a removed label, otherwise Good in edgeworn dustwrapper with marks to spine-panel.
