The eldest of the over-achieving sons of actor Steele MacKaye - this younger bothers were the poet Percy MacKaye and the conservationist/activist Benton MacKaye -- James MacKaye was an engineer who published adventurous books of philosophy and social thought. In the last few years before his untimely death, he was professor of philosophy at Dartmouth.
