About This Item

Londres [i.e. probably Amsterdam]: John Adamson, 1777-8 First edition of an interesting collection of letters dealing with life in pre-revolutionary France. Topics include the monarchy, the legislature, the French economy, the clergy, the theatre, music and opera, salons, current scandals, d'Alembert, Voltaire, Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, etc. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with burgundy and black morocco labels, edges sprinkled blue. . Four volumes, twelvemo.`. Some light wear to edges. A little light browning. Overall a very good set. Mathieu Francois Pidansat de Mairobert (1727-1779) was born in Champagne and brought up in the house of Madame Doublet de Persan. He became a members of the literary society that held meetings there, and contributed to the society's manuscript journal, which was later used in the preparation of the Memoires secrets" (1770). He became 'censeur royal' and was elected an associate member of the Academy of Caen. His reputation suffered by his involvement in the noted trial of Marquis de Brunoy, and he fell into a melancholy and shot himself. He was the author of Frangaises dans l'Amerique (1755)" " Reponse aux ecrits des Anglais sur les limites de l'Amerique Anglaise (1755); Memoire sur l'etat de la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales (1756), Anedoetes sur Madame la Comtesse de Barry (1776), and other works. His writings about his own country are of the most interest, as he utilized documents that were destroyed in the French Revolution. The present work was continued after his death. It eventually went to ten volumes, with the last six volumes having the title, L'Espion anglois.

About Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
