Stoll, 195 Broadway, New York, who was retiring on August 22, with no year given on the letter, the handwriting being of old school. Petrie, who ran unsuccessfully against John Bristow for a seat in the House of Commons from the Borough of Cricklade, discovered that the winner purchased votes, and took Bristow to court. This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 4 October 1947 at the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference. Two years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. At the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill addressed a mass meeting of 2,500 held at The Dome at Brighton at the conclusion of the conference on a Saturday afternoon. This lengthy address appears at pp.114-121 of this 123-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech".
