About This Item
New York: Samuel Weiser Inc., 2008. Second Printing 1976 . Trade Paperback. Good. 5 1/2" x 8. 187 Pages Indexed. Previous owner's name on the front endpaper. He also has written comments on the last five previously blank pages at the back of the book. Red underlining throughout Knowledge of Zen Buddhism in the west is largely due to work of the late Dr D. T. Suzuki of Japan who, after strenuous study attained his Zen enlightenment at the age of twenty seven. Thereafter he taught and wrote for sixty five years, with frequent visits to Europe and the U.S.A. When first published in 1950, Living by Zen was accepted by many as one of the most important works on Zen Buddhism by the author, who regarded it as a fresh attempt to explain to the West this unique approach to enlightenment. It is indeed a new introduction to the subject, a fit companion to his Introduction to Zen Buddhism published in 1934. Dr Suzuki, who spent so many years of his long life bringing Zen to the West, was a unique combination of a world-ranking authority on Mahayana Buddhism who was also a deeply enlightened man. Living by Zen, unknown for some years, will rouse fresh interest in this direct, profound and immensely practical way of life, which for twelve hundred years has helped to mould the philosophy, culture and art of China and Japan.
