Illustrated frontis to each volume - 3 portraits and 3 sepia photographic views (River Blackwater, County Cork, ; Ruins of Kilcolman, Spenser's home in Ireland, ; Glengarriff, County Cork.) each with a tissue guard. Each volume with an extra, decorative title page. A fine and clean set with a few of the gatherings still unopened. Finely bound, by Riviere, in early twentieth century quarter vellum with single raised bands. Green title labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Arts and Crafts style tall flower design with stems, leaves and flower in gilt to each spine. Blue cloth on boards. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Some minor marks to the cloth on a few of the boards but the spines all clean and the gilt bright so the set looks great on the shelf. A very attractive set of vellum bindings.

Cancel title page (1780), contents leaf, advert leaf, (dated 15th march 1779), 3-536pp. --- Vol 2.. Cancel title page (1781), contents leaf, 1-496,(p496 incorrectly numbered 196). --- Vol 3. Cancel title page (1781). contents leaf, 1-399pp. All three title pages have the Bartolozzi engraving but the engraving to vol.1 does not have the engravers name. Only one bookseller listed as the publisher, which is unusual for this set. Page edges tinted light green. Original silk page markers still present. The text blocks are in quite remarkably bright white condition, with no foxing or marking. Previous owners neat signature to the margin of the title page in each volume, dated 1783. Pp143/144 in vol.1 numbered twice but the text is complete and okay using catchwords. Previous owner colour printed bookplate on the front paste down endpaper of volume one. ---- Contemporary full tan calf bindings. Spines with gilt ruled lines and red and green labels, with gilt lettering and decoration. The bindings with some minimal age wear but are still very sound and attractive. This is a superior set of the Dublin edition, pre-dating the 4 vol London first edition. ----------- Fleeman 79.LP/2b (First instalment, first Dublin edition, second issue) and Fleeman 79.4LP/2c ( First instalment, first Dublin edition, third issue.

Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
