Chicago: Donohue & Henneberry, 1890. John (Peter) Altgeld (1847-1902), as Governor of Illinois, was a leader of the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party. As such, he was an influential reformer, dedicated to child labor laws and fair treatment for unionists. He might have been President, save for his birth in Germany. He died young, a result of his Civil War service. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition of some of his essays. Dark green cloth binding, with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 320 pages. Rubbed at the margins (to a bit of a fray at the foot of the spine. Withal, a solid copy dealing with questions that remain live today. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Original green cloth, titled in gilt on front and spine; plain endpapers; 320pp. Contemporary ink inscription to f.f.e.p.: "Compliments of the Author." Straight and tight, cloth rubbed, textblock detached from case at front hinge, rear hinge half split, else clean: Good only. John Altgeld (1847-1902), a Progressive Democrat, was the 20th Governor of Illinois, from 1893-1897. He supported labor interests, signing laws on workplace safety and child labor and refusing to break the Pullman strike. This book includes chapters on strikes, "Pensions for Soldiers," "The Abolition of Constables," and "The Eight-Hour Movement.
