About This Item

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1967. Fourth Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Maroon cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Owerniship inscription on f. paste down. Frontis plate. Illustrations. Plates. 306 pages clean and tight. This handy reference book provides the serious student of marine biology with the means of identifying the extraordinary variety of living creatures to be found on the British and Irish coasts, without the need for searching through large specialised monographs or papers scattered in zoological journals. It has been written to encourage observation of the habits and structure of the living animal in its natural surroundings, supplemented by closer study in the laboratory, with special attention to characters of systematic importance, and to give preliminary training in systematic work. The keys in this book should enable the collector to trace an animal at least to its genus; and in the process he will have learnt how to carry the investigation further if need be in the specialist monographs, of which full lists are given at the head of each section. In the fourth edition, the line drawings have been rearranged so that the explanations face them in each case; this has involved repagination. A section of half-tone illustrations has been added and minor changes have been made throughout the text. .
