Second free front end-paper has a gift inscription " Miss Rix. With sincerest greetings , Marshall Langhorne Xmas 1914" and Inscribed and signed by author: "How long ago I lauched this book, - It was my first canoe! And now it comes around again. To bear good-will to you. Henry van Dyke, The Hague, Jan. 11. 1915". Hand-written note initialed by author on dedication page. Van Dyke was the US Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg between 1913 and 1916. Miss Rix seems to have been known to him during that period. Marshall Langhorne was the Secretary of American Embassy at The Hague. Cover design by Margaret Armstrong. Dark blue clean covers with ornate decoration and lettering in gilt and green and white.. Colour frontis with protective tissue leaf, all additional 7 plates are present. Lightly rubbed corners, sound binding, clean pages and plates.
