Description:
Philadelphia: American Sunday School Union, 1869. Near fine.. First edition of this moral tale in the shape of its titular character, with illustrations by noted Philadelphia chromolithographer Ferdinand Moras. LITTLE MARIAN recounts the familiar tale of a child who has taken a story far too literally - in this case, MARIAN sets off on her own journey to find heaven after reading PILGRIM'S PROGRESS. Originally published in codex form in 1852 as LITTLE MARIAN'S PILGRIMAGE, this charming shape book capitalizes on the novelty of die-cut books in the mid-19th century, most notably those of Louis Prang. LITTLE MARIAN features chromolithographs by prominent Philadelphia lithographer Ferdinand Moras, who also provided illustrations for a variety of medical texts. This copy is in exceptionally sharp condition, and scarce thus. 6.75'' x 2.75''. Original shaped color pictorial wrappers. Illustrated with chromolithographs. 24 shaped pages. Binding with a hint of edgewear; subtle glue reinforcement to spine.… Read More
