About This Item

London: Constable & Co. Ltd,, 1917. First trade edition, first impression. A publisher's note describes how this collection, "together with the selection we published some years ago... make a total of one hundred stories which include, it is thought, all the best of the Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm" (p. v). Hudson remarks that in this book "Rackham added forty more stories by the Brothers Grimm to the sixty which he had already illustrated, his inspiration showing no decline" (Hudson, pp. 106-8). Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Mounted colour frontispiece and 11 similar plates, black and white illustrations in the text. Neat ownership initials "H. S. E." and December 1917 prize inscription on front pastedown awarding this copy to one Joyce Tankard, with his bookplate on verso. Cloth bright and square, trivial rubbing at extremities, outer leaves and edges foxed, contents clean. A very good copy. Latimore & Haskell, pp. 46-7; Riall, p. 129. Derek Hudson, Arthur Rackham.
