Ransome,] 1849 (dated in the plate). 610 x 440 mm.; image (without signature) measures 242 x 292 mm. One corner chipped, small tear in lower margin, but image in excellent condition.
First Edition. The largest and best portrait of Charles Lyell, the foremost British geologist of the nineteenth century, and author of Principles of Geology (1830-33), which had an enormous influence on Charles Darwin. The portrait formed part of a series titled Portraits of Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum, published in 1852 by G. Ransome. Very rare.
