About This Item

New York: Vanguard Press, 1947. First printing. Hardcover. Good/very good. Cloth in dust jacket, book shows heavy foxing and spotting to covers, tanning and offsetting to endpapers. Inscribed to James Laughlin on flyleaf. The dust jacket appears to be supplied from another copy, for an old clipped catalog entry for this book is inserted that makes no mention of a jacket. Farrell's essay "The Fate of Writing in America" can be found in this book; it was original published in New Directions 9 in 1946 and then as a separate pamphlet by New Directions later that year. In the preface to this book, Farrell acknowledges Laughlin's assistance in the preparation of this study of the state of publishing in the US in the 1940s. Great association copy!
