It was first composed (or at least transcribed) in Latin circa 1418-1427 by Thomas Kempis, a member of the Brothers of the Common Life (known as the Devotio Moderna movement) in what is now the Netherlands. It is a handbook for spiritual life, the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible and, apart from the Bible, one of the most widely translated and reprinted works in history.
