A collectible copy of the next-to-the-last book in the Adam Dalgliesh series, inscribed by the author ("To Anne | [Sig]") on the title page This is the first American edition. Size: 9" -11" - Small Quarto (Sm. 4to). 335 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Hardback bound in blue paper over boards, quarter bound in black textured paper with the title in bright gilt on the spine. The corners are sharp; the bottom corners show a slight bit of shelf wear. The dust jacket has no tears or chips, though there is a touch of wear at the head of the spine and a few spots on the rear panel. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Synopsis

P. D. James is the author of eighteen previous books, most of which have been filmed and broadcast on television in the United States and other countries. She spent thirty years in various departments of the British Civil Service, including the Police and Criminal Law Departments of Great Britain's Home Office. She has served as a magistrate and as a governor of the BBC. In 2000 she celebrated her eightieth birthday and published her autobiography, Time to be in Earnest. The recipient of many prizes and honors, she was created Baroness James of Holland Park in 1991. She lives in London and Oxford.
