Original brown cloth boards ornately decorated in gilt with front board showing a drag and snake pierced by an arrow and surrounded by seven stars. On both the title page and the spine the author's name is symbolized with the ancient swastika symbol, also known as a sauwastika - which is an older term used to distinguish to the left pointing swastika from the right. This is a traditional symbol and is no way connected to the German style swastika used during the war. This book is in two parts, all bound in one volume. Title page states fourth edition and the copyright page shows original publication date of 1889 whereas the title page shows the fourth edition copyright of 1898. Dark red end pages with the front pastedown having a 19th century bookplate in the upper left corner. There is a small dot on the front end page and pastedown. No handwriting noted in book. Hinge is cracked between the second and third front free end pages and a few pages have creases from corner folds. This narrow crack is what lowered the book from VG condition to VG minus. This is a highly sought after book and rare to find and 19th century edition. See photos.
