About This Item
New York : Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. Book. Illus. by Photos and steel engravings of tn Stuart portraits, including the Athaeneum Washington. Near Fine. 3/4 Leather. 2nd Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quite a remarkable copy, in 3/4 deep red morocco, gilt double lines along the edges, raised bands on the spine, gilt art deco flowers in the blocks between the raised bands and brown marbled boardswith matching marbled endpapers. Slight wear at two corners. Top edge gilt. In addition to the biography, there is a listing of about 1000 portraits executed by Stuart including their whereabouts as of 1879. Very clean and tight inside, nearly as new. No prior owner marks, no stains or age toning. There is no attribution for this fine binding which I suspect was a publisher's special, limited copy. .
