About This Item

London England: Book Club Associates. Very Good/Good. 1973. 1st Book Club Edition. Decorative Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Hardback HardbackIntroduction by Antonia Fraser. On 14th October 1066, Harold II of England fell in battle defending his kingdom against Duke William of Normandy. The last successful invasion of England had begun: within three months William 'the Conqueror' was crowned King, and during the next five years he withstood a series of uprisings and imposed a ruthless new system of government on England which enabled the small alien Norman aristocracy to dominate and subjugate the native population. The author shows how this remarkable man, born illegitimate and heir only to a relatively minor dukedom, was able to secure a kingdom by right of arms and turn it into one of the most efficiently organised states in Europe, though by no means a happy one. 16 pages of colour plates. 100 illustrations in black and white. SSmall waterstain mark to bottom edge of D/J. light foxing to end pages. Slight wear to edges of D/J and corners. We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature. .
