About This Item

New York:: Southwich and Pelsue,, 1809. One of the most famous political hatchet jobs in American History. Although at one time good friends, Paine and Cheetham had a serious falling out so at the time of Paine's death in 1809, the love was long lost. Paine had a talent for alienating his friends as well as his enemies. Once the revolutionary visionary whose pamphlets inspired his nation, Paine had deteriorated in old age into an embittered old radical without an audience. His last years were spent primarily in poverty and alcoholism. His death caused a renewed spate of attention and Cheetham, editor of the American Citizen, chose the moment to settle some old scores. A highly interesting and hard to find book showing minor wear and rubbing to boards with some spotting. Covers reattached by stiching at joints. Text is very good with only light foxing and a tiny piece missing from front blank.. First Edition. Original Paper Boards. Very Good. 8vo..
