About This Item

1890 1ed Life of Jefferson Davis CSA President Civil War Lincoln Assassination

"I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came."

– Jefferson Davis

This 1890 first edition account of the life of Jefferson Davis was published quickly following the Confederate President's death in December of 1889. This book covers all the important military endeavors of Davis from the War in Mexico, Battle of Buena Vista, his appointment in the U.S. Senate, and his election as president of the Confederate States of America. This book also includes important sections on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the emancipation of southern slaves.
