About This Item
This is a handsome, antique copy of "The Life of MAXIMILIEN ROBESPIERRE" with Extracts from His Unpublished Correspondence by G.H. Lewes. 1849; Chapman and Hall; London. Nicely bound by ZAEHNSDORF in three-quarter leather with marbled covers, marbled end papers, gilt top page edges, and five raised band and gilt decorations on the spine. Robespierre was a French lawyer and statesman who became the architect of the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror." He encouraged the execution, mostly by guillotine, of more than 17,000 enemies of the Revolution. The day after his arrest, Robespierre and 21 of his followers were guillotined before a cheering mob in the Place de la Revolution in Paris.
Condition:
There are tiny bits of what appear to be paper remnants at the top edge of the front cover; there are a few scuffs at the top edge of the back cover. Some chipping/small pieces missing on the spine. Bright gilt top page edges. The bottom edge of the spine has worn down. There is a 1.5" tear to the leather at the top-right corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
