About This Item

1916 John Lane Company trade size hardcover in hard to find dj. Dj is in acceptable condition. more than 1/2 of the spine of the dj is missing, the top 1/5 of the back panel is missing, the edges show moderate edgewear. Now in archival brodart protective sleeve. The inside pages are clean, unmarked & unaged. The gold guild on the top edge of the text block is very good. Many of the pages reamain uncut. Binding is tight & straight. Boards clean & square.Written by his daughter, Mrs.Adrian Porter with twenty Illustrations. From the dj front:"Sir Henniker Heaton's work has, in my view done more to draw the different parts of the Empire together than all the speeches of all the statesmen on both sides of the ocean." Such was the magnificent tribute of Earl Curzon to one who will always be remembered as "the father of the Imperial Penny Postage." A second Rowland Hill, he devoted himself with absolute singleness of purpose to postal reform & while he did not live to see penny postage established between England & France as he had hoped, it is impossible to compute how far the noble response of the Colonies in the Great War is due to the better understanding between them & the Mother Country promoted by his labours. The life of this great Postal Reformer is full of varied interest, for he began his career in Australia in the sixties & ever after maintained so great an affection for that country that he was known in Parliament as the "Member for Australia." He was an inveterate globe-trotter, a great clubman, a chess player, an inimitable host with an inexhaustible fund of good stories & he naturally gathered around him many friends of distinction.
