Volume I: xiv, 376pp plus 32pp of publisher's catalogue bound in at rear, with folding chart giving Sterne's pedigree and illustation; Volume II: viii, 452pp, with double page illustration in place of frontispiece and one further illustration. Volumes are uniformly bound in deep green buckram with blind tool and gilt decorations and gilt lettering. Page edges untrimmed. 8vo. Both volumes are a little rubbed at edges and rounded on corners and spine ends; volume one has a small splattered white mark on the front boards, while volume two has a crack in the cloth at the spine base. Both volumes have matching small black ink marks on the front paste down, else the volumes a neat, clean and bright internally, both remaining firm and tight in their binding. An interesting biographical work on Laurence Sterne, an eighteenth-century Anglo-Irish writer most well-known for his works The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, The Sermons of Mr. Yorrick, and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. Written by Anglo-Irish biographer and art critic Percy Fitzgerald. Complete in two handsomely bound volumes. This edition was based on a previous biographical work of Sterne published by Chapman and Hall in 1864, also written by Fitzgerald, though this edition has been rewritten with new additions. Including an illustrated frontispiece of Sterne to Volume I, collated and complete. Containing the small stamp of a previous owner to the front blank of each volume: 'R.F.
