About This Item

Lawrence, KS: Alumni Association of the University of Kansas, 1920. First Edition . Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo. 251 pages. Interesting provenance and association copy. This first edition copy was apparently presented to the Kansas City Public library by the K.U. Alumni Association. The copy was returned because of missing pages. There is a notation in the hand of the author that the book no longer belongs to the KCPL, and now belongs to Jane ______. There is another notation in the hand of the author that the book now belongs to "Laurel of Laurel Town." A related notation by Laurel _____ explains how the book was given to him some 40 years prior by the above mentioned Jane. Finally, there is a handwritten paragraph by the author explaining "...In 1920 certain printers and binders in New York turned Bolshivik. At the time they were reading proofs and binding this book. The author being desperately ill, was unable to cope with their opinionatedness. Therefore the book came out with a number of typographical errors; and a few copies were enlivened with blank pages." Although this volume was one of those "enlivened with blank pages," the blanks have later been repaired by trimmed pages which were glued over the original leaves. Volume is ex-library with heavy markings, etc., both internal and external. Hinges (internal) are broke and text block is only loosely attached to covers. Cloth over spine is heavily worn and paper covers over boards are rubbed, stained, and worn along edges. Contents appear complete. Value is in the notations, inscriptions, and associations.
