About This Item

"The Life of George Stephenson ~ Railway Engineer" by Samuel Smiles. 1858 1st American edition; Ticknor and Fields; Boston. Nicknamed the "Father of Railways," Stephenson was a pioneer of rail transport in the 19th century. George and his son, Robert, built the 'Locomotion No. 1,' the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line. There is a 12-page publisher's catalog at the back.

Condition:
Small, light stain at the top of the back cover; there are a few tiny stains on the spine. Small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine, and at the bottom 2 cover corner tips. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Occasional mild foxing to the pages (though a bit heavier on the frontispiece, the title page, and the tissue guard in between). Name written in old pencil handwriting on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
