Please See All Photos. ~ Galla Placidia (392/93 - 27 November 450) was a significant figure in the Roman Empire during the first half of the 5th century. She was the daughter of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. In her early life, she was taken hostage by Alaric, the king of the Visigoths, during the sack of Rome in 410 CE. After returning to Rome, she became regent for her young son, Honorius' heir, Valentinian III. She was queen consort to Ataulf, king of the Visigoths from 414 until his death in 415, and briefly empress consort to Constantius III in 421. She managed the government administration as a regent during the early reign of Valentinian III until her death. On the night of August 24, 410, Galla Placidia was in Rome, which was under siege by a vast army of some 100,000 warriors led by the king of the Visigoths named Alaric. Despite the dire circumstances, she remained in the city, offering her regal support to the Senate as it worked to stave off disaster. Galla Placidia's life was marked by her resilience and ability to navigate through periods of great turmoil and change3. Her influence and actions had a lasting impact on the history of the Roman Empire3
