London, Longmans, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1855 1st. Two volumes. Hardback, 11 x 9 inches. In full vellum bindings, gilt paneled boards with crests to front and rear “Oxoniensis Academia.” Full gilt decorated spines with twin brown leather spine title labels. Full gilt page edging, marbled endpapers In very good condition. Some darkening and spotting to covers, some darkening to spines. Gilt leather dedication labels to endpapers “Charles Edward Oakley, Demy of Magdalen College, University Theological Scholar, MDCCCLV. (1855.)” Some light mild foxing to blank prelims, some moderate foxing to frontis plates. Inner plates all very clean and bright. Plates not guarded, so there are some areas of offsetting to adjacent pages. Minor area of foxing/darkening to plate at p52 v.1. A couple of minor handling marks else a very good clean and tight set. Two vols: xvi + 492pp & v + 573pp. Illustrated with 40 full-page B&W engraved plates, (28 & 12 respectively), (includes 14 maps and plans.), plus many B&W woodcut engravings and figures within text.
