London: John Murray. Good with no dust jacket. 1875. Hardcover. xvi, 447, ads and vi,545 pp. Index in 2nd volume. Frontis plate in Vol. I of the Hague. Dark red cloth with brilliant gilt to spine, blind stamped designs to covers, black end papers. Library numbers to spine and normal library marks on the interiors, frontis plate very darkened, original tissue guard still present, most pages never separated, binding firm. Very handsome edition. John Oldenbarnevelt was a hero in the long struggle between the Netherlands and Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was he who convinced England and France to the side with the Dutch. He was also a firm supporter of William the Silent, the strong Dutch leader who won crucial victories against Spain. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
