Very Good. 23cm, first edition, in 2 volumes, xii,389 & vii,475,[6]pp., ads., with 4 engraved plates including frontis, appendix, index, brown cloth, gilt spine titles and decoration, spine ends slightly worn else a very good to fine set (mt). A sequel to the author's other books on the rise and development of the Netherlands. John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877), an American historian, was noted for his books on Holland and in this set shows that the Thirty Years' War established the independence of the Dutch Republic.
