About This Item

London: Hurst and Blackett, 1862. Two volumes. x,459; iv,415,[5]pp., plus frontispiece and folding plate. Original blue cloth, stamped in blind and gilt, spine gilt. Spines faded, corners lightly rubbed. Hinges tender. Very light scattered foxing. Very good. An intimate biography of British naval officer Charles Napier, assembled by his stepson. Napier enjoyed a long and successful career including involvement in the War of 1812, where he led his troops in the Battle at Fort McHenry. The engagement provided inspiration for Francis Scott Key's poem, "The Defence of Fort McHenry," which was later set to music as "The Star-Spangled Banner.
