First published in 1682, this is the first complete English translation of Baldinucci's biography of his contemporary, the Italian Baroque sculpter and architect Bernini; Baldinucci, a Florentine art historian and biographer, was the author of the first history of figurative art that was European rather than national or regional, the first history of engravings and etchings, and the first dictionary of artistic terms; a foreword by Robert Enggass provides background on author and subject (gray marbled paper-covered boards with gold lettering on black spine, title page has black & red lettering, slight edgewear; tan pictorial dust jacket with brown lettering has slight edgewear; otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy)
