About This Item

Paris: Roberti Stephani [Robert Estienne], 1543. First Editions. leather_bound. Latter polished calf rebacked with new spine labels in gilt. Aeg. Very good. 113 (7) leaves, 498 (20), 84 leaves, 186 (6), 70, 2 leaves -- pagination. 16.5 x 11 cm. A complete set of Estienne's edition of the works of the ancient Roman agricultural writers. Complete sets are uncommon. Estienne, schlolar-printer known for his olive tree title page device adhered to the ideals of the Reformation and when subsequently suspected for heresy. he fled Paris, removed to Geneva where he could freely confess his faith. Estienne paid special attention to the quality of his printing, not only by using the olive tree insignia designed by Proofreader G. Tory but with types designed by Claude Garamond specifically for the printing house. It was Robert's attention to typography during this time that was unparalleled by his successors. This sammmelband on a series of works on Roman works on agriculture discusses farming and husbandry for each month of the year including details on grafting, plus discussion on the number of daylight in a calendar year. The first title is the principal work divided into fourteen parts, the work of the 4th century agronomist Palladius: a general introduction to farming. Inner top gutter stained, interior contents generally clean, back cover stains, title and final leaf corner chipped. Triple gilt cover border panels, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. SCHRIEBER 70a,b,c,d,e.
