Metropolitanarum Urbium Historia Civilis Et Ecclesiastica... Paris: Stephane Michallet, 1685. [All published]. [16], 490 pp., [14 pp. index]. Woodcut ornaments, initials, and title vignette. Some light foxing. [BOUND WITH:] MABILLION, Jean [1632-1707]. De Liturgia Gallicana Libri III...Paris: Edmond Martin & Jean Boudot, 1685. [5], 477 pp., [1 p. errata]. Engraved title vignette, 2 engraved headpieces and initials. Other woodcut ornaments and initials. Some light foxing. First edition of the Gallican liturgy edited with notes by Jean Mabillion, a Benedictine monk of the Congration of St. Maur, best known for his De Re Diplomatica (1681-1704), a foundation work in the science of Latin paleography. Gallicanism is the doctrine whereby the church and king of France are held to have ecclesiastical rights which are independent of the papal jurisdiction. It began in the thirteenth century, but was fully elaborated by Edmond Richer in the seventeenth century, and incorporated by Bossuet in a solemn Declaration of the French clergy in 1682. Brunet III 1261. Goldsmith 1719 (listed under Liturgy of the Ancient Gallican Rite).
