First edition of the Gallican liturgy edited with notes by Jean Mabillion, a Benedictine monk of the Congration of St. Maur, best known for his De Re Diplomatica (1681-1704), a foundation work in the science of Latin paleography. Gallicanism is the doctrine whereby the church and king of France are held to have ecclesiastical rights which are independent of the papal jurisdiction. It began in the thirteenth century, but was fully elaborated by Edmond Richer in the seventeenth century, and incorporated by Bossuet in a solemn Declaration of the French clergy in 1682.
