Amsterdam…Paris: Durand, Neveu, 1782., 1782. 2 Volumes. 12mo. pp. 2 p.l., 199; 2 p.l., 188; 2 p.l., 191 [i. e. 181]; 2 p.l., 102 [i.e. 202]. with half-titles. contemporary marbled calf, gilt backs (rubbed, some joints cracked & some spines ends chipped, 1 cover detached, 1 spine label wanting & 2 others partly defective, paper lightly embrowned). Early edition (Brun’s edition G), published the same year as the first and with the same imprint, of one of the most famous novels of the eighteenth century. It is also "probably the most skilfully crafted "epistolary" novel ever written. It is a ‘polyphonic work, and Laclos has created an appropriate voice or style for each character." (New Oxford Companion to Literature in French) The plot revolves around the seduction of two virtuous young women planned by the protagonists Valmont and Madame de Mertueil, once lovers and now rivals in libertinage.
