BALTIMORE, MD: N. G. MAXWELL. GOOD. PUB 1820. FIRST EDITION. HARDCOVER. PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL HALF-BOUND WITH BROWN CLOTH COVERED BOARDS AND CALF SPINE AND CORNERS. BOOK IS MISSIN THE TOP THIRD OF THE SPINE BUT IS STILL SOLIDLY BOUND. Jared Sparks was the first minister of the newly organized "First Independent Church of Baltimore" (Unitarianism) ordained so by William Ellery Channing on May 5, 1819. This book (series of letters) presents the tenets of this liberal theology by enumerating it's contrasts to the Protestant Episcopal Church doctrine as put forth in a sermon by Rev. Wm E. Wyatt. After his withdrawal from the Ministry in 1823 he began his journey to historiography with the publishing of the 12 volumes of "The Writings of George Washington"(1834-1837). In 1838-1849 he was the first McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard. His appointment to this position, says his biographer, was the first academic encouragement of American history, and of original historical research in the American field. .
