About This Item
Dublin, 1818. xv,112pp. Early 20th-century brown cloth, spine gilt. Head and foot of spine rubbed, small gouge out of cloth at edge of spine. Bookplate on front pastedown. Internally quite clean. Very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. Birkbeck, who encouraged British settlement in Illinois, gives substantial advice on emigration, costs of land, travelling conditions, the character of the local inhabitants (including a defense of Kentuckians), and much more. "These letters were written to friends and inquirers in England and contain a wealth of information about economic and social conditions in the West" - Buck. "The letters contain a great deal of important information about social and economic conditions in Illinois" - Graff. The Dublin edition, as with the London editions, was published without the maps found in the first two American editions. HOWES B467. BUCK 105. GRAFF 303 (another ed).
